A bit about Keegan Shim from Toronto, Ontario:

Keegan Shim (he/him) is a roller skater and dancer from Toronto, ON, representing Roller Dance T.O and FamJam Crew. He first discovered his love of roller skating back in 2018 when he spontaneously went to his local rink, Scooters Roller Palace. This newly developed passion led him to buy his own pair of skates and as they say, “the rest is history”! He remembers the summer of 2019 being at the rink at almost every opening hour and then practicing at home until the early morning hours.

With Keegan’s dance background, specifically in street dance, he was able to merge elements of his craft into roller skating which has contributed to his unique style today. He also takes inspiration and knowledge from the pioneers, experienced skaters and others in the global skate community.

Keegan is also passionate about community building and teaching. As a Skate IA Certified instructor, you can find him helping facilitate events, classes/workshops and practice sessions, which provide an environment for all new and experience skaters to learn, grow and have fun! Keegan has also been features on Breakfast Television, CTV, BlogTO and has worked with musical artists such as Maya Killtron, Sean Jones (of the Canadian R&B band “In Essence”), Liyah and TRP.P. Travelling and experiencing skate culture in different cities around the world is what Keegan aspires to do.Continual learning is the mission and he hopes he can do his part in preserving roller skate culture so it can persist for many years to come.

When Keegan is not roller skating, he is a full-time commercial real estate agent.

Learn some new moves for our Pop Up Roller Rink at the JVC on the 20th!

Take a single class, or take all three. It is recommended to take all three classes as they operate from a progressive standpoint. No matter your level, you can learn something new to add to your dance skating!

Must register in advance to attend.

11:30 a.m. FOUNDATIONS: This class goes over some basics that can improve your dance skating – beginner moves, grooves, and utilizing stops and edges. This is open to all levels as Keegan’s dance background can help those who are looking to find that extra juice in their steps. Even experienced skaters can learn something here!

To take this class you will need to be comfortable with skating forwards, stopping and control of your balance. If you are brand new to skating, we recommend you take some of our Learn to Skate classes first.

12:45 p.m. DRILLS, TECHNIQUE & CHOREO: In this class, Keegan will cover different drills, techniques, and methods that have helped him execute dance skate moves efficiently to make them look and feel better. The session will conclude with a choreography putting some steps together.

In this class you already have some experience dance skating and are comfortable on your skates. This class will build on foundations. If you are newer to roller dance Keegan recommends taking foundations first before taking this class.

2:00 p.m. CONCEPTS / FREESTYLE: In this class you will learn how to improve your freestyle by utilizing different methods of storytelling such as creating concepts, changing timing, directions, energy, etc. You will also get social and skate/dance with others (learn how to vibe with other people).
